Dr. Debra Diamond has written several blogs for us and also shared her insights during our NDE FORUM 5 about the aftereffects of NDEs based on her research, summarized in her book Life After Near Death. She is not only a researcher but is also a psychic and medium. In today’s post, she answers : What is the difference between a psychic and a medium?

********************

People are often confused about the difference between psychics and mediums. This is complicated by the fact that all mediums are psychic – but not all psychics are mediums, and that sometimes both psychic and mediumship readings are offered in the same session.

Since I am both a psychic and a medium, I’ll describe the differences to you.  They involve different responsibilities and a different set of skills.

The Difference Between Psychics and Mediums

Here’s the difference between a psychic and a medium:

A psychic retrieves information about such things as relationships, career, money, love, life path, and health. Psychics may also use their skills to receive information about a sitters’ past, present, future, or all three. They may do this by using a variety of tools including tarot cards, astrology charts or runes, or they may employ alternate methods of divination such as scrying or reading auric fields.  Some psychics, like myself, do not use tools, since I receive the information spontaneously. Psychic readings may offer guidance, insight, a fresh perspective, or approaches for dealing with challenges.

Mediums are different than psychics. Mediums are about the connection to the afterlife and they connect with the sitter’s loved ones in Spirit. A medium’s work is all about communicating with those who’ve passed on, who aren’t really dead, as demonstrated by mediumship. Mediumship doesn’t involve predictions, or analysis of one’s career, relationships, finances or life issues.

How Do Mediums Actually Do This?

In my work as a medium, I reach a higher energetic “vibration” to connect and communicate with those who have passed over. Think of me as a radio antennae able to reach higher frequencies to connect to more complex, higher channels where the afterlife exists. You need more ‘wattage’ to connect to these higher planes and this is the primary difference between a psychic and a medium. Some mediums like myself are able to pick up angels and spirit guides. Bear in mind that psychics are not able to connect to those on the “other side.”

As a medium, people on the “other side” are able to communicate and send messages through me to their loved ones on earth. I’m the vessel – the channel – and it takes extraordinary focus and “tuning in” to receive and pass on these messages. Whenever I’m doing a reading, I always ask Spirit to reveal to me only the information that’s for the greatest good.

The intent of mediumship is to let the sitter know that their deceased loves ones are still here, that they love them and that they are okay. They may provide support, offer reassurance and diminish the fear of death. Loved ones in Spirit may offer messages of love and healing, or specific information understood only by the sitter. It is important to approach all readings, whether mediumship or psychic, with few expectations since there is no way to know in advance who will come through, what information they will bring or how it will be presented.

The Three Types of Mediums

To complicate things even more, there are a few categories of mediumship- including ‘physical mediumship,’ ‘mental mediumship’ and ‘evidential mediumship.’

A physical medium may be able to take on the physical characteristics of the deceased loved one including physical transfiguration or mimicking a physical condition of the loved one. As you can imagine, this is intense!

A mental medium uses mental faculties to communicate with those on the other side, to pass along messages and to act as a vessel for communication. This is what I do.

An evidential medium will connect you with your loved ones and ancestors in Spirit, to demonstrate they’re really here and that you are connected with a specific individual. Along with the evidence, there can also be guidance, truth and love from your loved ones, reassuring us of life beyond physical death. An evidential medium may also work as a mental medium, often at the same time and this is what I also do!

Regardless of whether someone is a psychic or a medium, the results all relate to the ability to connect to the unseen or invisible world. To demonstrate to us that more exists than what we are told or can touch, feel, hear or see through our physical senses. As such, psychics and mediums can provide an alternative resource for those seeking guidance, connection and reassurance. It is the psychics and mediums’ true honor to be of service and to use their abilities to assist others for the highest good.
